Waves and playholes come alive on the Arkansas River through town in two locations – one at the Buena Vista River Park and one in downtown Salida.
In Buena Vista, Colorado swimming, sunning and playing with your dogs are major activities here. The park is also connected to soccer fields, a disc golf course, covered gazebo for picnicking, hiking trails, a park for kids and advanced rock climbers and softball and baseball fields.
The whitewater park in Salida, Colorado runs right through the historic downtown. Here, visitors will find retail shopping, art galleries, riverside dining options, the river trail, and access to a historic boutique hotel. Climbing rocks and a park area are also available. Live bands are a popular attraction at The Riverside Park, an outdoor entertainment venue.
The Buena Vista whitewater park is the largest whitewater park in Colorado. This whitewater park stretches from the Buena Vista River Park to the South Main retail and residential area. The Salida whitewater park is flanked by restaurants and offers great surf waves for kayakers and stand up paddle boarders. River tubing is gaining popularity and rentals are available in town.
To kick off the whitewater season the annual CKS Paddlefest in Buena Vista takes place on Memorial Day weekend each year. The worlds oldest whitewater festival FIBARK is held Fathers Day weekend in Salida, Colorado.
Planning to hit the waves in Salida? Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer, safety should always come first. Here are some essential tips to keep you and others safe while enjoying the river:
1. Skip the Ankle Leashes!
Ankle leashes are a major hazard in river surfing. Instead, opt for a quick-release leash or, in some cases, no leash at all. Your safety depends on it!
2. Wear a PFD or Lifejacket
Even if it’s bulky, a PFD is crucial. It keeps you buoyant and can save your life if you’re knocked unconscious. We recommend the Astral YTV for its low profile and river-specific design.
3. Helmets are Non-Negotiable
Protect your head! There’s plenty to bump into, and a helmet can prevent serious injuries.
4. Observe Before You Dive In
Watch other surfers to see how they navigate the wave. Pay attention to where they enter and exit, and learn from their techniques.
5. Respect the Line-Up
Communication is key. Make eye contact, be courteous, and take turns. Remember, the wave isn’t going anywhere!
6. Mind the Downstream Traffic
Crafts moving downstream always have the right of way. Use signals to communicate with them and keep the flow safe for everyone.
7. Never Go Alone
If it’s your first time, wait for others or bring a buddy. Locals know the hidden dangers and are usually happy to share tips.
8. Educate and Support Each Other
We’re all in this together! If you see someone who could use a tip, kindly offer advice. Let’s keep the river safe and fun for everyone.
