A total of 127 different minerals have been identified in Chaffee County. The best known of the valley’s gem fields is Mount Antero where prospectors have found aquamarine crystals, bright blue beryl, smoky quartz and  topaz, among others.

People who want to get into the hobby of rock hunting should contact their local gem and mineral club and visit the nearest Forest Service office for information.
