Big game seasons – archery, muzzleloading and rifle seasons – are all observed each fall in Chaffee County.
Big game license applications are accepted by the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife each April for the following fall’s hunt. Elk hunting in the high country is the primary draw for hunters. Other big game include mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, bear and mountain lion. Small game such as wild turkey, Canadian geese, duck, ptarmigan, downy grouse and blue grouse are also plentiful.
